I often use sweetened butter bean paste for making Japanese sweets, but my husband is not a big fan of sweetened beans. He doesn’t eat even ‘Azuki’ Red Bean paste which is an essential ingredient for Asian sweets. I realised that the sweetness and the flavour of beans are not a good mix for some people. Then I added a variety of flavours to the butter bean paste. These spreads are just delicious and anyone can enjoy.

hi Hiroko, have you made a sweet bean spread like these ones but without butter? Would it be too grainy if it is just beans? Thank you!

Jenny, I have made a variety of bean pastes. Softly cooked beans, sugar and a little bit of salt, that’s all I use. You don’t need to add butter, but the paste might be too thick. If so, you can add some water. And the texture would be creamy if beans are softly cooked. Good luck!

thank you. I made the chocolate one and we ate it for breakfast today with some bread. My 3-year-old seemed to like it. I hope to include this in our regular breakfast rotation. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
